The antibacterial activity of Carica papaya extracts was investigated in this study, which evaluated the antibacterial effects of alkaloidal and phenolic extracts derived from C. papaya seed and peel against some clinical bacterial strains. Fresh seed and peel of C. papaya were separated from the fruit, washed, diced, and air-dried for 7days. The dried peel and seed were then powdered, macerated in 10% acetic acid in ethanol, and in ethanol defatted with n-hexane to obtain alkaloidal and phenol extracts respectively, concentrated to dryness at 60 ºC respectively. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were evaluated using the agar-well diffusion method, with concentrations of 12.5, 25, 100, and 200 mg/ml. The extracts exhibited inhibitory effects against all tested clinical isolates, except for Escherichia coli at 200 mg/ml and Salmonella, Streptococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus at all concentrations. The peel alkaloidal extract was more effective, particularly against Shigella sp, exhibiting the largest inhibitory zone. Generally, the seed extracts exhibited an inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. However, both the peel and seed phenol extracts displayed larger zones of inhibition compared to the alkaloidal extract.
